Press Release: PathoGene Nominate for AZ BioIndustry Association Award.

Two Flagstaff-based companies located in the Northern Arizona Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (NACET) were recently nominated for the Arizona BioIndustry Associations “Fast Start” Award. This award recognizes the most significant for-profit bioscience company headquartered in Arizona and founded on or after January1, 2008. It is a tribute to Flagstaff’s strong bioscience sector that two of the three finalists are local companies this year.

Flagship Biosciences and PathoGene of Flagstaff and Cancer Prevention Pharmaceuticals of Tucson are the three finalists. The winner will be announced at Bio Fest 2010 in Scottsdale, Arizona on October 27th. This event typically attracts over 500 attendees from all areas of the bioscience industry. “These two companies are representative of a growing biosciences presence in Flagstaff, and illustrate the importance of technology incubators like NACET in moving forward new technology ideas towards the marketplace”, said Russ Yelton, CEO of NACET. “With this growing biosciences presence and facilities like NACET it becomes more attractive for entrepreneurs to locate their businesses in Flagstaff rather than going to Phoenix where these types of resources have historically been more available”, said Todd Snowden, President of PathoGene.

Flagship Biosciences provides tissue-based companion diagnostics development to pharmaceutical and medical device firms. With 60 years of combined pharmaceutical pathology experience, Flagship delivers quantitative data on efficacy and toxicology in tissues available to all clients via a secure web portal. Flagship recently launched a patent-pending tissue multiplexing capability called FACTS (Feature Analysis of Consecutive Tissue Sections), which can be run in a secure GLP or CLIA environment in oncology clinical trials and translational research. “Tissue-based testing is a fundamental part of developing new drugs or devices, and the nomination of Flagship Biosciences by AZBio for this award indicates the importance of digital pathology to the pharmaceutical and medical device infrastructure in Arizona,” said Steven Potts, Ph.D., CEO of Flagship Biosciences.

PathoGene, LLC is a molecular diagnostics company focused on developing diagnostic tools for infectious diseases with a particular focus on “super bugs” or those infectious agents which are resistant to the drugs that are typically used to treat them. PathoGene has licensed technology from TGen and is currently developing this technology for use in hospitals and other clinics to help physician make better decisions about the most effective treatment for these life-threatening infections. In addition to providing better information, the diagnostics that PathoGene is developing also provide the information more quickly, improving patient treatment as well as lowering costs to the healthcare system.

“With over 90,000 workers and 840 establishments in the Arizona biosciences, receiving a nomination is a stunning achievement. The accomplishments of the nominees demonstrate the extraordinary talent that Arizona has amassed” stated Robert S. Green, AZBio’s President and CEO. “Located throughout the state and spanning a multitude of specialties, Arizona’s bioscience knowledge base is deep and bodes well for our future” Green stated.
